More detail on this person: James Wideman Phillips James Wideman Phillips LTC (Ret) James Wideman Phillips, 79, peacefully passed away January 13, 2012 at his home in Ozark, Alabama with his children by his side. Born April 8, 1932 in Timmonsville, S.C., he was the son of the late James (Coach) Wideman and Sadie Fischer Phillips. His loving wife of 50 years, Joan F. Phillips preceded him in death in 2005. Jim was raised in South Carolina and attended high school in Timmonsville. Jim enlisted in the South Carolina Army National Guard at the age of 17, and continued his service while attending Clemson University on a ROTC scholarship. Upon graduation in 1954 with a bachelor degree in textile engineering, Jim accepted his commission in the United States Army where he served his country for the next 21 years. He was a highly decorated veteran and served in Vietnam. His medals and awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service, Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign and numerous other medals. Upon his retirement in 1975, he and his family made their home in Ozark where Jim enjoyed farming, real estate and most important to him, being "Poppy" to his grandchildren and many adopted family members. Jim is survived by his son, John Allen Phillips, Newnan, Ga.; his daughter, Audrey Phillips Bennett, Dothan, Al; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 15, 2012 at Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home in Ozark, Al. from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Ozark on Monday, January 16, 2012 at 2:00pm. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors and Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home in Ozark directing. Memorials may be made to Alacare Hospice, 3379 West Main Street, Dothan, Alabama 36305.
