Col., Army (Ret) Bill Paini, senior financial advisor with Ameriprise Financial in Manassas, Va, for the last 14 years, died at Fairfax INOVA Hospital Sunday morning, August 5, 2007. Bill succumbed after a long battle with thyroid cancer. He lived his last years enjoying his life to the fullest. Personal: Bill received a BA in economics from Rutgers University in 1968. He furthered his education with an MS in Business and Public Administration in 1977 from East Carolina University and an MS in Logistics Management in 1985 from Florida Institute of Technology. He was also a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College in 1984 and other service schools. Prior to his current profession, Bill was a career Army officer serving proudly for 24 and a half years, retiring in 1993. He was a highly decorated combat helicopter pilot who served tours in Viet Nam and Europe and posts in the United States. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal (14 awards), Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and other service awards. The "Huey" helicopter that Bill flew in combat in Viet Nam is on display in the Udvar-Hazy Center of the National Air and Space Museum at Dulles International Airport. Memberships: Bill was an avid hunter and lifetime member of the NRA and of Safari Club International. In his last year, Bill and his wife Sue fulfilled a lifelong dream of a hunting safari to South Africa. Survivors: Bill is survived by his loving wife, Sue Paini of Burke, Va; four daughters, Teresa Silver of Fredericksburg, Va, Teri Mabry of Gainesville, Fla., Brenda Lee of Dale City, Va and Nikki Murray of Philadelphia, as well as 10 adoring grandchildren. Services: Are being provided by Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery with full Military Honors at a future date.
