Richard Joaquin Pereira Sr., USMC Ret., born 24 April, 1937 in San Jose, Calif., lifelong aviator, aeronautical engineer, loving husband, father and grandfather, an avid tennis player and sailor. He also enjoyed technical and mechanical challenges including restoring a 1929 Model A Ford and a 1966 Ford Mustang, restoring several sail and motor boats, building his own home and solar energy projects. He was a graduate of San Jose State University with a BS degree in Aerospace Engineering and earned a MBA from Boston University. He spent 26 years as a commissioned officer and naval aviator, flying F-4 Phantom Jets in the United State Marine Corps, including two tours of duty in Vietnam, service with the United Nations peace keeping forces in Egypt, and NATO in Europe. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he dedicated himself to community service and education through the North Carolina Community College system, first by developing an electronic technology course at Pamlico Communi ty College, and during the last five years as director of the aviation division for Guilford Technical Community College. He also served on the national curriculum committee of the University Aviation Assn. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sallyrene Pinkham Pereira; six children, Richard J. Pereira Jr. of Melbourne, Fla., Thomas A. Pereira of St. Thomas, VI, Susan M. Pereira Kempsell of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Christianne Pereira of Padova, Italy, Michael W. Pereira of Morganton, and Elizabeth M. Pereira, of the home; seven grandchildren; mother, Mary Lou Pereira of San Jose, Calif.; brothers, David Pereira of Perris, Calif., and Jeffrey Pereira of Santa Ana, Calif.; sisters, Irene Pereira Kemmerly of Port Hueneme, Calif., and Kathleen Pereira Briggs of San Jose, Calif. The family will receive friends 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church to be followed by Mass at 11:30 a.m. At 9:30 a.m. Thursday there will be a visitation and Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church of New Bern, followed by burial with military honors in the National cemetery at New Bern. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Richard Joaquin Pereira Sr. Memorial Aviation Scholarship Fund of Guilford Technical Community College, c/o G.T.C.C., P.O. Box 309, Jamestown, N.C. 27282.
