More detail on this person: James A Phelps LTCOL, US ARMY KOREA, VIETNAM PHELPS, James A. "Flip" Lt. Col. (Ret.) 81, of Land O' Lakes, passed away quietly Jan. 18, 2010 after being diagnosed with ALS . He was a U. S. Army veteran and served in the Vietnam War. Flip flew with both rotary and fixed wing aircraft. He graduated from the University of Miami. In 1996, he moved from St. Louis, MO to St. Pete Beach, and in 2003 moved in with his son. Flip enjoyed spending hours volunteering at the 6th Medical Group, MacDill AFB, visiting veterans at the Tampa VA hospital and watching his grandchildren grow. James was a lifetime member of the MOAA and Quad A, and a member of the American Legion & Veterans of Foreign Wars. Flip was preceded in death by his wife Florence (Frimi) and his son, Mitchell. He is survived by his son, Douglas and his wife, Karen; daughter, Teri; half-sister, Dianne Tenuto Neeley; four grandchildren, Sara, Mason, Mitchell and Brendan and one great-grandchild. Donations may be made to The American Legion, Dept of Florida, P.O. Box 547859, Orlando, FL 32854. Interment will take place on Jan. 25th at 2:30 pm at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. The Phelps family will host a celebration of his life at 4 pm at their home. Rabbi Hoffman will have Shiva at 5 pm.
