More detail on this person: Dale W Pierce Obituaries Tampa Tribune, The (FL) - Wednesday, August 6, 2003 PIERCE, Dale W., Lt. Col. US Army (Ret.) 71, of Hendersonville, N.C. died July 30, 2003. He was a native of Dade City, and lived in North Carolina since 1976. He was a son of the late John D. Pierce and Maye Quick Pierce. He received a bachelor's degree from Florida Southern University, master's degrees from Troy State University in Alabama and the University of Hawaii and a doctorate in education from Western Carolina University. He taught social studies at Rugby Middle School for 15 years and was a coach for the school's soccer team. He served as a pilot in the Army and Spent three tours of duty in Vietnam. He retired after 23 years of service. He was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and of many other military schools, including Ranger School, Basic and Advanced Airborne School, Basic and Advanced Fixed Wing School, various helicopter schools, the Infantry Officer's and Infantry Advanced Courses and several others. He was awarded numerous medals and decorations, including two Distinguished Flying Grosses, five Bronze Stars, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Expert Infantry and Parachutist Badges, the Master Army Aviator Badge, the Ranger Tab and many more. Surviving is his wife, Barbara T. Pierce; a son, Michael A. Pierce of Los Angeles; two nephews, Errol and Eric Tillman; three great-nephews; and a great-niece. Funeral services were held at the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, with Rev Walker Toney officiating. Military honors were presented by the Buncombe County Veterans Memorial Team. Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250-0301. Thos.
