Pope September 25, 1935- August 30, 2012 Columbus, Georgia- MAJ (Ret) Richard L. Pope, age 76, resident of Columbus, died on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral services are scheduled at the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus on Saturday, September 1, 2012, 3 p.m. with Rev. Scott Tucker and Rev. Aimee Baxter officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, August 31, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. MAJ Pope, son of the late Frank Pierce Pope and Mara Fae Perdue Pope, was born September 25, 1935 in Cusseta, GA. He was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church and also Sons of the American Revolution. MAJ Pope graduated from Jordan High School in 1955. He was a graduate of Columbus College. MAJ Pope served his country honorably in the U.S. Army for over 24 years, serving two tours in Vietnam. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Pope and Paul Pope and two sisters, Sara Pope Cannon and Elizabeth Pope Heffelfinger. MAJ Pope is survived by two daughters, Cathy Pope Nix and her husband Gary of Alabaster, AL and Teresa Pope Young and her husband Joe of Columbus; one sister, Katherine Pope Hearn of Gainesville, FL; five grandchildren, Tiffany Nix Smith and her husband Robert of Columbus, Jake Nix and his wife Kaycie of Birmingham, AL, Ryan Young of Columbus, Amber Nix of Marietta, GA, and Kristen Young of Columbus; two great-granddaughters, Brakya Smith and Makayla Smith; best friend for 32 years and her family, Elizabeth Thornton of Columbus; sons, Richard Thornton and his wife Carol of West Point, GA, Andy Thornton and his wife Janet of Fortson, GA, and Philip Thornton and his wife Gwen of Harrisburg, PA; grandchildren, Michael Thornton, Miles Thornton, Olivia Thornton, Allison Thornton, and Aaron Thornton; great-granddaughter, Aziyah Danielle; many other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Wounded Warriors, 2115 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101.
