He was 72. Mr. Porter was born in Fairfield, Ill., and moved to Gainesville in 1980. He was a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. He was a Catholic. Survivors include his wife, Maria Porter of Gainesville; a son, Anthony Howard Porter of Gainesville; a daughter, Marie Porter of Gainesville; and sisters Clare Bill of Gainesville; Ann Bassette of Tulsa, Okla., and Macy Gallespie.
