More detail on this person: Lt. Col. Charles Alvin Poss Lt. Col. Charles Alvin Poss, 69, died peacefully at his Candler home Tuesday, August 10, 1999. He was a gentleman of honor and devotion to duty. His family was the most important part of his life and his grandchildren were his greatest joy. Next to his family, he enjoyed fishing at the Outer Banks, Braves baseball, feeding wild birds, and was an avid local soccer fan. Lt. Col. Poss was born in Buncombe County and was a son of the late Brady and Alva Davis Poss, Sr. He was married to Barbara Jane Warren Poss who died in 1995. He is survived by two sons, Michael Warren Poss of Candler and Charles Thomas Poss and his wife Linda Fisher Poss of Candler; two grandchildren, Adam Thomas Poss and Rachel Elizabeth Poss; three brothers, Jerry Poss of Hollywood, Alabama, George Poss of Asheville, and Jackie Warren of Candler; extended family, and numerous friends. Lt. Col. Poss served in the United States Army as an infantryman in Korea and and aviator during two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was awarded numerous commendations, including the Air Medal (with eight Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Bronze Star. Following his retirement from the armed forces, Lt. Col. Poss worked for and retired from the US Postal Service. He served his community through his involvement with the Candler Lions Club, and the Hominy Valley Wildlife Club. The family wishes to thank friends for their support during Charles' illness and also Mountain Area Hospice for their caring service. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home. Full military honors will be provided by a detachment from Fort Bragg at Pisgah View Memorial Park. His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Friday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. Memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 16, Asheville, NC 28802.
