DONALD JOSEPH Title: DEATH AND FUNERAL NOTICES San Diego Union-Tribune, The (CA) - Sunday, March 28, 2004 Donald Joseph Pouliot passed away March 14, 2004 at the age of 81. Resident of San Diego for 51 years, he enlisted in the Navy in June of 1941 from his hometown of Sanford, Maine. CDR Pouliot served the Navy for more than 30 years, advancing from Seaman Apprentice to Commander. He was the recipient of 21 US and Foreign combat awards for actions performed in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. CDR Pouliot was Admin Assistant to Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, Commander Naval Forces Vietnam from 1969-1970 and was Special Assistance Officer for San Diego's Prisoner of War and USS Pueblo crew families. He also embarked on the USS Oklahoma City on the Seventh Fleet staff. After leaving the Navy in 1971, he was Training and Community Relations Officer for the Veteran's Administration Medical Center until his retirement in 1984. A longtime Veteran's advocate, he was a member of the DAV, VFW, Fleet Reserve Association, Military Officers Association of America and the American Legion. He served as the California State Commander of the Disabled American Veterans, DAV Chapter 2 Commander, and was on the board of the DAV Industries. He was also on the Governor's Job Training Coordination Council and the Federal Committee on Aging. CDR Pouliot was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Bonnie Jean. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia (Michael) Fuqua of San Diego and Theresa (Martin) Schlabach of Bettendorf, Iowa, 5 grandchildren, Lt. Chris Fuqua, Tara Pritchett, and Kevin, Erin and Matthew Schlabach, great-grandson, Alexander, sister, Pauline Morin, and three brothers, Henry, Norman and Paul. Services are planned for Friday, April 2 at 1 p.m. at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, 1945 Illion Avenue, San Diego, with inurnment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to: the DAV, Chapter 2, 1488 Market St., San Diego, CA 92101 or the Alzheimer's Association of San Diego, 4950 Murphy Canyon Rd., Ste 250, San Diego, CA 92123.
