More detail on this person: Capt. Carl M. "Pete" 1Peterson II USN (ret.) 75, of Orange Beach, AL passed away Sunday, March 31, 2019. Pete as he was commonly referred as was born in Wichita, KS in 1943 to Carl Marvin and Clara May (Gingrich) Peterson. Pete's time in the Boy Scouts and Eagle Scouts, along with his Dad's encouragement, led him to join the Navy in 1964. He started with Naval flight training in Pensacola, FL, trained in helicopters at Ellison Field, and was then assigned to Midway Island for Search and Rescue Missions flying the H34 and H19. He was hand-picked for the Helicopter Attack Squadron 3 in 1966 flying Huey gunship to protect the Navy's PBRs and crews along the Vietnam rivers. He was a LT when he arrived in Saigon in 1968 assigned to Seawolves DET 7. After Vietnam he returned to Whiting Field as a Flight Instructor for VT3. Pete married Diana Rumpanos and the next year in 1971 was named "Flight Instructor of the Year", and then moved on to San Diego to join HS-6. He completed a tour in the Mediterranean Sea, then aboard the USS Constellation off the coast of Vietnam. During this time Pete and Diana had two children, Winde and Nicholas. After finishing his college degree at San Diego State he was assigned to Air Pac as the Assistant Safety Officer. In 1983, he became the Executive Officer and then commander of the Helicopter Antisub Squadron 7 aboard the USS John F Kennedy off the coast of Lebanon. In 1985, Pete became the Assistant Air Officer on the USS Kitty Hawk, and then became the Presiding Officer for the Physical Evaluation Board in San Diego. After 27 years of service, in September of 1991, he retired from the Navy as a Captain. He worked as the Manufacturing Manager for Advanced Honey Comb Technology in San Marcos, CA until he retired in 1999. At his retirement many of the Decorations and Medals Pete received were: Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (w/ Silver Star), Navy Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal (w/ Bronze Star), Air Medal (w/ Bronze Star), Air Medal (22 Strike Flights), Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross (w/Bronze Star), Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Medal (w/ Silver Star), Pistol Ribbon (38 Cal), Meritorious Service Medal. He then moved with his family to Orange Beach, AL to enjoy retired life. Pete volunteered his time serving on the Variance Board for The City of Orange Beach and enjoyed going to City Council meetings. Pete worked hard daily on various projects including vehicles, boats and airplanes. He enjoyed sailing, adventures, traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends. He was very proud of his children and his granddaughter Eleanor. He loved to talk with others and tell great stories of his time in the Navy. He also enjoyed spending time with special military friends in HAL3and HS-6 DET 1. Pete was loved and admired by all who knew him. He is preceded in death by his parents. Pete is survived by his wife of 48 years, Diana Peterson of Orange Beach, AL; daughter, Winde Sciarra (Domenic) of Sierra Madre, CA; son, Nicholas Peterson (Jennifer) of Orange Beach, AL; granddaughter, Eleanor Sciarra of Sierra Madre, CA; brother, James "Jim" Peterson (Susan) of Abita Springs, LA; sister, Barbara Peterson of New Orleans, LA; brother-in-law, William Rumpanos (Catherine); nieces, Ally Marie and Margaret Claire of Santa Cruz, CA. A Funeral Cortege will leave Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel at 10:30am Friday, April 12, 2019 for a Graveside Service with full military honors at Barrancas National Cemetery.
