More detail on this person: LTC James Robert Parker Jr., U.S. Army (Retired), 88, passed away peacefully at his home in Virginia Beach, Virginia on July 27, 2021 surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Jimmy was born in Norfolk, Virginia and was the son of the late James Robert Parker Sr., and Avalon Hick Parker. He was a graduate of Granby High School, and a graduate of V.M.I. class of 1955. He was a decorated veteran who served as a pilot in the 68th Top Tiger Huey helicopter battalion in the Vietnam War in 1965-1966. He served 20 years in the United States Army and later retired from Civil Service. Jimmy is preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie "Frankie" Parker to whom he was married for 58 years, and a daughter Robyn Parker Williams. He is survived by his sister, Cornelia Parker Burns Lee and a nephew David Burns, his children, Janice Parker Karr, James Parker III, Susan Parker Moyer, Daniel Parker, Lisa Parker and Jennifer Parker Flannagan, 16 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by his wife of nine years, Barbara Henley Parker, and her children, Douglas Lee Henley, Jr., Anne Henley Eberdt, and Elizabeth Henley Absher, and her 7 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. Barbara and her family are so grateful for the years they shared with Jimmy, and treasure the many memories they created together. Jimmy would often say his greatest achievement was the raising of his seven children over the years with Frankie. He taught them perseverance, the importance of a strong work ethic, to be respectful to all and to appreciate what you have worked for. He built a family beach cottage in Carova, NC, in 1978 and the whole tribe of children and grandchildren spent many summers with many wonderful memories built from these trips. Jimmy passes on his love for country, family and sailing. His favorite pastime was to search on the internet for the next boat to buy, buy it, and regret the buy after some time and search for another! His children, their families and multiple friends are forever grateful to have been a part of his and Frankie's life. Rest In Peace "Colonel." You exemplified a life well lived. A memorial service will be held for family and friends at Galilee Church, 3928 Pacific Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA on Monday, August 23, 2021 at 11:00 am. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jimmy's name to the Virginia Beach Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (VBSPCA) or By His Wounds Ministry, 1340 N. Great Neck Road #1272-137, Virginia Beach, VA 23454. Online condolences may be made to the family at hdoliver.com.
