More detail on this person: Senator & Lt. Col. (Ret.) William Walter Redman, Jr., 77, of Statesville passed away December 25, 2010, at home with his family by his side. He was born on October 15, 1933, in Iredell County and was the son of the late William W. Redman and Mildred "Susie" Redman. He attended Iredell County schools and was a veteran of the N.C. Air National Guard and the US Army. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Statesville on Davie Avenue where he served as a deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He had also been a member, deacon and teacher at Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh for more than 10 years. Bill was a retired Lt. Colonel, retired NC State Senator, retired Utilities Commission member and retired Executive VP of the NC Telecommunications Industry Association. Upon retirement from the military, as a master aviator, Lt. Col. Redman had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Star Medal with 2/OLC, 16 Air Medals, two Commendation Medals, Meritorious Service Medal, Master Army Aviator Wings, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and numerous other service and campaign medals. Bill earned his B.S. from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL. In 1981, he was inducted into the Officer Candidate School's "Hall of Fame" at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was also inducted as a Distinguished Member of the Regiment at Fort Eustis, Virginia in 1990. His second career began in public relations with the Northwestern Bank and progressed to his own real estate firm.

As a five term NC State Senator, Bill had been elected Senate Minority Leader and was Vice Chairman of the Transportation Committee and Human Resources Committee. He was also a member of the Commerce, Finance, Rules, Legislative Ethics and four other additional committees.

Governor James Martin appointed Senator Redman to eight and a half years with the NC Utilities Commission, beginning in 1987. He served as Chairman from 1989-1993. During this period, he served as a member of the National Association of Administrative Law Judges. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Regulatory Research Institute at Ohio State University. He served as a member of the Board of Advisors for the National Association of Utilities at New Mexico State University.

For his service in the NC State Senate, Bill was honored with two awards, "Order of the Long Leaf Pine," North Carolina's highest civilian award and the "Valand Award," by the NC Mental Health Association.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth "Libby" Wilhelm Redman, whom he married on December 28, 1956; a daughter, Lisa Flanigan (Michael) of Foscoe, NC; daughter Kathryn "Kit" Roberts (Gary) of Candler, NC; and daughter Adrienne Franklin (Michael) of Candler, NC; grandson Christopher Flanigan (Kathryn), great grandson, James Redman Flanigan; grandson Tyler Tanzi, granddaughters Abigail "Abi" Flanigan and Margaret "Maggie" Flanigan.

Services celebrating Bill's life will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Jeff Porter and Dr. Jack Causey officiating. Burial will follow with full military rites at South River Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 P.M. Tuesday evening at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home.
