More detail on this person: John Wayne Rogers - 72 of Valdosta, GA passed away on Thursday June 18, 2020 at his residence after a lengthy illness. John was born on August 9, 1947 in Hahira, GA to the late Mary Alice Wood Dedge. John was a graduate of Valdosta High School. John was an avid golfer. He enjoyed golfing with his friends and grandchildren at Stone Creek Golf Club where he was a longtime member. He was a member of First Christian Church, where in his earlier years he was a dedicated Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of both the Wednesday Night Men's Bowling League and Thursday Night Mixed League. After enduring lung cancer surgery in October of 2017, John remained on oxygen 24/7 and medically retired from banking in January of 2018. He was ultimately diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis. John was a Vietnam veteran and served a tour as a Huey Helicopter Pilot with the US Army 9th Infantry Division. After returning from Vietnam, he transferred to Fort Rucker, Alabama as a helicopter instructor until his service commitment was over. After the Army, he held several positions in the banking industry including: commercial lender, senior commercial lender, Vice President, Senior Vice President, President, and Chief Executive Officer. John loved fishing, hunting, bowling, golfing, and working outside. After retirement, he was looking forward to moving to Arizona with his wife to the dryer climate, but his illness prohibited the move. Along with his mother and stepdad, John Newcomb he is preceded in death by his only son, Christopher Boyd Rogers and his grandson, Dakota Allen Starling. Survivors include his wife, Diane Brogdon McClure Rogers of Valdosta, GA; Sons: Michael S. (Jackie) McClure of Valdosta, GA, Michael Christopher McClure of North Carolina; Daughter, Melissa McClure Starling (Rob Mason) of Valdosta, GA; Grandchildren: Dalton Hawke, Logan Barker, and Preston McClure of Valdosta, GA, Nydia McClure and Chandler McClure of North Carolina; Great Grandson: Benjamin Barker; Sisters: Susan Marie (Spence) of Oklahoma and Margaret Willa Dean of Florida; Aunt Virgina Sanders of Albany, GA; Brother-in-law, Bobby Brogdon (Denise) of Valdosta, GA, Harry Brogdon of Valdosta; Sister-in-law, Shirley Howling of Adel, GA; and several nieces and nephews. Private family services to honor John will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2020 in the Valdosta Chapel of Music Funeral Services with burial to follow in Guthrie Cemetery in Berrien County, GA.
