RANES, 64, of Jacksonville, FL passed away on January 6, 2013 following a brief illness. The son of John W. Ranes, Sr., CDR, USN, (Ret), he was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Ranes. Ranes is succeeded by Linda, his wife of 43 years, daughters, Heather Ranes and Deanna Ranes Vetzel, grandson, Jackson Vetzel, and sister, Sharon Ranes Slominski (Paul). He is also succeeded by his beloved friends Molly, Bea and Buddy. Ranes was born November 6, 1948 in Baltimore, MD. He graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a BA in Accounting. He proudly served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War. Ranes was a Partner in Dixon Hughes Goodman who specialized in Tax Planning. He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts Tax Section and the Florida Institute of CPAs. He was a CPA in Texas, Oklahoma and Florida. Ranes felt community service was important working with Promise to Kate (Board), Baptist Hospital Foundation (Advisory Board), Big Brothers Big Sisters (Alumni Board) and JAX Chamber (JWBC and ATHENA volunteer) among other organizations. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 10 at 11 am at Church of the Redeemer, 4815-200 Executive Park Court, Suite 201, Jacksonville, FL 32216. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Promise to Kate, Wounded Warrior Project or First Coast No More Homeless Pets. HARDAGE-GIDDENS, THE OAKLAWN CHAPEL, 4801 San Jose Boulevard is serving the family.
