More detail on this person: A/C crashed while attempting to land at night on instrument approach in heavy rain at Tri-State Airport near Huntington WV killing the deputy commander of the 1st Army (MG Edwin H. Burba) and two Army pilots. Verns USAF Class Was 55-Q.

My father was killed 29 October 1970 in the crash of a U-8F aircraft. The accident occured during a diversion to Tri-State Airport in Huntingdon, WV. They were one engine in-op and lost the other engine enroute to the airport. They crashed roughly a half mile from the airport environment in rough terrain.

He served with the Air Force from 1954 to 1960 as a B-47 pilot with the 98th Bombardment Wing, 345th Bomb Squadron, SAC, Lincoln AFB. He also served with the Coast Guard as a SAR pilot flying the SA-16 Grumman Albatross. We were stationed at both Salem, Mass. and Quonset Point, RI. His class for Primary Helicopter was 66-2A. His first tour was with the 227th Assault Helicopter Battalion. He was shot down in a UH-1B on his first tour. His class for the U-21 was 68-8. While at Ft. Wolters, he also served as a C-47 Instructor Pilot. His second tour was with the 146th Aviation Company, flying the U-21 for the Snoopers.

We were stationed at Fort Meade when he was killed.
