More detail on this person: Col Lavern Richard Riesterer, 73 OBITUARIES Daily Press (Newport News, VA) - Monday, January 5, 1998 NEWPORT NEWS - Lavern Richard Riesterer, Lt. Col. (Ret.), U.S. Army, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, in Portsmouth Naval Hospital after a short illness. He had been a resident of Newport News for the past 25 years. He was born on Feb. 15, 1924, in Concordia, Mo., and was a communicant of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. He earned a B.S. degree from Central Missouri State College, and an M.S. degree from the University of Southern California. Col. Riesterer served 28 years in the military, retiring in 1972. He devoted his career almost entirely to Army Aviation, flying rotary, fixed-wing and jet aircraft. In 1960 he graduated from the USAF Experimental Flight Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., and was serving as a senior army aviator upon his retirement. He served in World War II, as well as the Korean and Vietnam wars, earning various awards and decorations. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Mary King Riesterer, and a daughter, Leslie R. Campbell of Alexandria. A memorial service will be held at The Regimental Chapel on Madison Ave., Fort Eustis, at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 5. Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Army Transportation Museum Foundation, Drawer D, Fort Eustis 23604.
