Stringer, 83, of Severna Park, MD passed away on
February 12, 2017, surrounded by his family. He
was a loving husband, beloved father of ten
children, and an accomplished pilot and aviation
engineer. Paul was the son of the late Walter
Stringer and the late Marion Howell Smith. He was
born in Joliet, IL on March 8, 1933. He grew up in
a military family and spent formative years living
in post-WWII Europe. Paul attended Marquette
University where he earned a degree in electrical
engineering and met his wife Louise Gardner.
Paul and Louise were married in Mauston, WI on
June 15, 1957 and celebrated over 59 years of
marriage. As a military family, they traveled
extensively throughout the US, in addition to time
stationed in Germany, raising their children along
the way. They made Severna Park their home as
residents of the Berrywood community in1984.
Paul served for 30 years in the US Army as a Pilot
and Engineer rising to the rank of Lieutenant
Colonel. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam
earning multiple commendations including the
Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, and
the Purple Heart. He graduated from the Naval Test
Pilot School at Patuxent River, MD and served in
the Army Flight Test Agency. He was one of the
few pilots who tested the Army AH-56 Cheyenne
prototype compound aircraft, which combined
characteristics of both a helicopter and an
airplane. After retiring from the military in
1980, Paul worked in the private sector with a
focus on improving flight safety by incorporating
human factors into design and operations
systems.
He is predeceased by his son Terrence Stringer and
daughter Margaret Stringer. He is survived by his
wife, Louise, his sister, Patricia Putman, his
children Cindy (James) Sanzo, Greg (Denise)
Stringer, Tom (Sally) Stringer, Bryan Stringer,
Mary (Brian) Egenton, Kevin (Emily Riddick)
Stringer, Gary Stringer, and Michael (Polly Hicks)
Stringer, as well as 19 grandchildren. Paul was a
devoted Catholic and a member of St. John the
Evangelist Catholic Church in Severna Park.
A viewing will be held on Friday, February 17 from
10:00 AM -11:00 AM at Barranco & Sons. P.A.
Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy,
followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11:30 AM
at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 689
Ritchie Hwy in Severna Park. Interment will follow
at Maryland Veterans Cemetery Crownsville. In lieu
of flowers, donations to the National Parkinson
Foundation, www.parkinson.org would be
appreciated.
