More detail on this person: Mr Phillip Sheaffer, 66 PHILLIP SHEAFFER WAS DECORATED VETERAN St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) - Friday, June 21, 2002 Phillip Sheaffer, a retired Army lieutenant colonel and a helicopter pilot who did two tours of duty in Vietnam, died Monday (June 17, 2002) of a stroke at St. Joseph's Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla. He was 66 and lived in Chesterfield. He was born in Hagerstown, Md., and moved to St. Louis in 1973. He married Janet Denson in 1959, and she died in 1998. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1959 and served in the Army for 28 years until retirement. He earned a master's degr ee in aeronautical and astronautical aviation from Stanford University and a master's degree in business administration from Lindenwood University. Mr. Sheaffer served in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966 and from 1968 to 1969. He was decorated for his contributions as a Huey pilot, squadron leader and company commander. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal with 33 oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and the Purple Heart. After retirement, Mr. Sheaffer worked at Emerson Electric for 18 years, ending his career as an executive program manager in 1997. He was a member of VFW Post 3944 and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 808 North Mason Road, Creve Coeur, with burial at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Among the survivors are two sons, Mark Sheaffer of Miami and Joshua Sheaffer of Columbia, Mo.; a daughter, Katherine G. Thoene of Dallas; his mother, Maud Sheaffer of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
