More detail on this person: John Lawrence Stafslien John Lawrence Stafslien Redwood Times (CA) - Tuesday, October 10, 2006 January 26, 1947 - September 25, 2006 John was born January 26, 1947 in Warren, Minnesota. As a young man, John enjoyed the outdoors. He rode horses, hunted, fished, and even built a log cabin with a friend at the age of fifteen. John joined the army in 1966 and became a decorated helicopter pilot in the Vietnam war, receiving the honor of a silver star aviation medal, a bronze star, two purple hearts, and numerous other medals for his bravery. He was always there for his comrades, the same way he has always been there for his family and friends. In 1972 John and his friend Bruce drove from Minnesota to Southern Humboldt in John's 1949 Ford pick-up truck. John met Cynthia in 1973 and they became homesteaders in the Ettersburg area. Together they raised their four sons on a ranch where they planted a vineyard and numerous fruit trees and raised horses, chickens, and goats. John loved all animals, especially wild birds, and over the years has turned his homestead into an animal refuge and a wild bird sanctuary. John was a kind and gentle man who stood for what he believed in while respecting all living things and valuing the simple things in life. He loved his home, his family, and nature. He took care to respect and enjoy the bounty of the land. From his perfectly ripened fruits, his hand-cleaned chicken eggs, to his master fishing and mushroom hunting, there was a degree of honor and respect. John was preceded in death by his father, Clifford, and his brother, Tim. He is survived by his mother, Margaret, of Minnesota; his loving wife, Cynthia; his four sons, Ben, Leif, Joe, and Noah; his daughter-in-laws, Marcy, Kora, Julie, and Maya; his four grandchildren, Nadia, Jasper, Sonya, and Malia; his sister-in-law Barbara; his niece, Ona, and nephews, Jeb, Sam, and Isaac; grand-nieces, Jasmine, Dakota, Savanah, Georgia, and Brooklyn, and grand-nephew, Avery. John is loved and will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, and all of his critters. May John be remembered for the loving and honorable man that he was - a true patriot and a veteran for peace. May we all continue to feel John's presence through those experiences that he has taught us to so thoroughly enjoy. That curious robin that comes a little closer than usual, that perfectly ripened pear, or your grandchild's tender hands around your neck. We love you John - you will always be with us. ***** A celebration of John's life will be held October 14 at 2 p.m. at Beginnings in Briceland. All those who knew and loved him are welcome.
