Obituary DOVER - LTC Lloyd Alfred Schmid, son of
Albert Schmid and Lillian Wood was born in
Greenwich, Connecticut on Oct 9, 1930 passed
away on May, 3 2013. Lloyd was married to
Winifred Connor for 23 years and they resided in
Dover. He had two living sisters Lois Howell of
Houston, Texas and Lynn Knable of Camden; and
one brother, deceased, Allen of Greenwich, Conn.
Also survived by five married children with his
first wife, Katharine LeVerne Mitchell, deceased,
Lloyd Albert and his wife Mie of Magnolia, Lorna
Allyson and her husband David Boldt of Herndon,
Va., Lisa Anne and her husband Craig Brown of
LaCenter, Wash., Leland Alec and his wife Kris of
Savannah, Ga., and Kurt Charles and his wife
Rachelle of Olympia, Wash. He and Katherine are
also survived by 18 grandchildren and 21
great-grandchildren. Lloyd is also survived by
three married step-daughters, Paula Owens and her
husband Jerry from Lewes, Susan Lindale and her
husband Ron of Milford, and Wendy Failing and her
husband Jiggs of Hartley with four grandchildren
and seven great-grandchildren. Lloyd joined the
Army Reserves when he was 17 and entered into
active service in 1960 and was selected for
Officer Candidate School which he followed with
Flight School to become an Army Aviator. Lloyd's
career distinguished him as an American hero
serving in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. He was
awarded many significant military awards to
include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze
Star medal, Air Medal and Master Army Aviator
Badge. Over the course of his career the Schmid
family traversed the highways and by-ways of
America from duty station to duty station with the
longest tour served as Commanding Officer of
Rankin Army Airfield in Japan for four years. LTC
Schmid leaves a legacy of military service that
spans 3 generations and
over 100 years of service to our country. His call
name was the "Joker 13" and the stories that will
live on reflect that was the metal of the man.
Viewing is on Wednesday May 8, 2013 from 6 to 8
p.m. at Torbert's Funeral Home on Bradford St in
Dover followed by a memorial service on Thursday
May 9, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. Interment at Arlington
National Cemetery with full military honors will
be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the
family requests donations be made in Lloyd's name
to the Wounded Warrior Project
