More detail on this person: William Earl Sparks Sr, 54 OBITUARIES Savannah Morning News (GA) - Friday, January 28, 2000 ATLANTA -- William Earl Sparks Sr., 54, a former Savannah contractor, died Jan. 22 after a lengthy illness. The native of Danville, Va., joined the Army during the Vietnam era and was commissioned a second lieutenant. He attended Army Aviation School at Hunter Army Airfield and was deployed in 1969 to Vietnam, where he earned the Distinguished Flying Star and the Bronze Star. After leaving active duty in 1972 he attended the University of Georgia and graduated magna cum laude from the Terry School of Business in 1974. He then moved to Savannah and was involved as a residential and commercial contractor for many years. He attended St. John's Episcopal Church and belonged to the Oglethorpe Club, the Savannah Yacht Club, the Plimsol Club, the Debtor's Club, the First City Club and other organizations. In Savannah, he coached youth soccer at the Islands YMCA. He served in the Army Reserve at the unit, battalion and command levels before retiring as a lieutenant colonel. In 1993, after five years as a primary contractor in northern Virginia, he moved to Atlanta and became vice president for business development at Dynamac Corp. SURVIVORS: three children, Catherine Ashley Sparks and William Earl Sparks Jr., both of Atlanta, and Robert Lattimore Sparks of Savannah; his father and stepmother, Dewey Columbus Sparks Sr. and Viola K. Sparks of Danville; four siblings, Dewey C. Sparks Jr., Patricia Sparks Moon, Sandra Sparks Owen of Richmond, Va., and Carolyn Sparks Rauscher of Lackland, Fla.; his companion, Sydnee Jack; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. MEMORIAL SERVICE: 3 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church in Savannah. INTERMENT: in National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., with full military honors. Cremation Society of the South, Austell. REMEMBRANCES: Sarcoidosis Research Institute, 3475 Central Ave., Memphis, TN 38111.
