"Dave" Spurlock, 70, of Burke, Va., formerly of York, died Dec. 23 at his home. He was the husband of Jacquelyn (Gerler) Spurlock, to whom he was married for 51 years. A wake will be 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, Va. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Jan. 16 at the chapel at Fort Myer in Arlington, Va. Burial with full military honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery, followed by a reception at Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, Va. Col. Burke was born April 11, 1931, in Charleston, W.Va. He was the son of the late Col. Ralph Olney Spurlock and the late Ada Arelda Abel. He was a U.S. Marine Corps aviator, test pilot and officer, retiring in 1981. He attended the U.S. Marine Corps Flight School and the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School and was a 1971 graduate of Navy Post Graduate School. He had been a test pilot at Patuxent River, where he set the world's speed record in an HSS-2 in 1961. He was an operations officer in Jacksonville, N.C.; executive officer and commanding officer in DaNang, Vietnam; head of Soviet tactical aviation for the Defense Intelligence Agency; section head of the Manpower Plans and Policy branch in Washington, D.C.; worked at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I.; head of the Manpower Control branch and Manpower Acquisition Training; and was executive assistant to Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower until his retirement from the Marine Corps. He also worked at American Power Jet Corp. in Alexandria, Va., and was manager of the government systems department for DCS Corp. in Alexandria. He was a 1953 graduate of Wagner College . During his service in the Marine Corps, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with 12 strike-flight awards and one bronze star, Presidential Unit Commendation with one bronze star, Navy Unit Award, Marine Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal with one star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four stars, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Service Unit Citation Gallantry Cross Color, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Civil Actions Color First Class, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Legion of Merit. Col. Spurlock also is survived by three daughters, Debra McCarthy of Fairfax Station, Va., Bonnie Cook of Burke, and Raine Weiss of Novi, Mich.; and seven grandchildren.
