More detail on this person: Earl C. Smith, Major US Army Retired Of Callawassie Island Okatie, SC formerly of Leesburg, Va. passed away on May 14, 2017 while under hospice care in Beaufort Memorial Hospital. He was born on July 12, 1943 in Elizabeth City, NC, son of Raymond and Wilma (Imeson) Smith. He began his military career in the US Navy and continued his service with the US Army. Earl served as a Helicopter Pilot with the 9th Aviation Battalion and Rucker 121 Aviation Company. In addition he was an Instructor Pilot, Commander and Staff Officer. He served multiple tours of duty in Vietnam and also served in Germany. He retired from the US Army, in 1982, after 20 years of distinguished Military Service. Earl graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi and pursued a second career as a financial advisor retiring from Well Fargo Advisors in Leesburg, VA. Earl leaves behind son Douglas "Bart" Smith, daughter Kathleen Smith (Henry Mazaleski), and grandson Andrew Smith. He also leaves behind his brother Wayne (Karen) Smith, nephew Raymond, and sister-in-law, Ann (Bill) Anderson, nephews Robert, Rebecca and Paul. He was predeceased in death by his wife Margaret Wylie Smith. He is survived by his loving companion Sally Crooke Kneiser. Earl fondly remembered his Army friends and loved to reminisce about his time in service to our country. Earl enjoyed a great connection of friends here in the Low Country as well as apassion for golf. A special thank you to Hospice at Beaufort Memorial Hospital and to his doctors and nurses. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association or to a charity of the donor's preference. Visitation will be held at Anderson Funeral Home on May 25, 2017 at 11:30a.m. with the memorial service commencing at 12:45pm, followed by interment at Beaufort National Cemetery at 2:00pm.
