Shiffler Jr. passed away Thursday, May 26, 2010, in Santa Rosa following a sudden illness. He was born on Nov. 20, 1931, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to George and Mary Lyon Shiffler Sr. Following graduation from Washington and Jefferson College, Mr. Shiffler began a long and distinguished career as an aviator with the U.S. Marine Corps. During the first of two tours of duty in Vietnam, he was the recipient of the Silver Star, awarded for gallantry in action in 1965. He retired with the rank of Major in 1974 after more than 21 years of service to his country. Mr. Shiffler has been a resident of Yountville since 1990, where he has pursued his lifelong interests in cars and photography. He was also an active member of the Napa Airport Pilots Association. His survivors include his wife of almost 58 years, the former Patricia Anne Jones of Yountville, his daughter Inger Shiffler of Houston, Texas, and a sister, Mary Jane Cavallo of Tinton Falls, New Jersey. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Friday at 2 p.m. at Treadway and Wigger Funeral Chapel. Contributions to a charity of the donor's preference have been suggested by the family.
