More detail on this person: I am seeking
information on what unit/units Joe Shimer may have
served in. Let me explain. He was my step father
from the time I was 4 years old until I was 15. I
kept in touch at least somewhat until his death in
1989/1990. He passed away less than 6 months of
having his pilots license pulled due to failure to
pass his flight physical. He was approximately 50
years old at the time. My mother has passed on as
well and I am trying to put together the pieces of
Joe's life as he had a great influence on me. I
went into the Air Force at least partially due to
his influence, even though he was Army. I know
that he served in Vietnam, flying. I know he was
not drafted but had been in the Army and stayed in
for more than one tour. He had family in
California and in North Carolina. He eventually
flew in Alaska, worked the pipeline, flew fire
support out west, and flew for the oil company
Tiger Drilling. I am trying to put together
information on his service and his life. He had
three sons I believe. Anyway, I want to put
together information on his service and such for
my daughter as he was a tremendous father figure.
He took me up a lot in Tiger Drillings helicopter,
bought my first horse for me, supported my
competitive riding, backpacking, doing non girlie
activities - outdoors stuff so I want to honor him
with a record of as much of his life as I can.
