More detail on this person: Colonel Harold B Or Buz Snyder Jr Col. Buz Snyder Served As VMI Commandant News-Gazette, The (Lexington, VA) - Wednesday, February 22, 2012 Retired Army Col. Harold B. "Buz" Snyder Jr., a former commandant of cadets at the Virginia Military Institute, died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012. Mr. Snyder was a 1956 distinguished military graduate of VMI, where, from 1981 to 1984, he served as commander of the VMI Army ROTC unit and commandant of cadets. During a distinguished 28-year career in the Army, he had assignments in command and staff in seven states, the District of Columbia and five countries abroad. An expert in military aviation, he earned a master's degree in aerodynamics from Georgia Tech and graduated from the Navy War College. He was a decorated combat veteran and master aviator with numerous awards, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Army Air medals. In 1984, he retired to eastern Henrico County. He was a member and past president of the VMI Club of Richmond, a member and past president of the Varina Lions Club, and a member and chairman of the J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College Board. He was also a member of the Old Dominion Eye Foundation Board, the James River Association and the Richmond Audubon Society. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, the former Nelda R. Wood; two sons, Hal Snyder of Frederick, Md., and Chip Snyder of Eden, N.C.; three sisters, Martha Tom of Fresh Meadows, N.Y., Johanna Staub of Francestown, N.H., and Elizabeth knight of Gladwyne, Pa.; a brother, Thomas Snyder of Edmonton, Alberta; and six grandchildren. Burial was private. A remembrance reception will be held this Sunday, Feb. 26, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Nelsen Reception Center, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond. A memorial gathering will also be held May 5 in conjunction with the 20th annual Varina Lions Club Canoe-A-Thon, of which Mr. Snyder was the founding father. Details will be forthcoming.
