Herschel Boyd "Steve" Stephens, 76, Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Hopkinsville and Trigg County, died Saturday, July 16, 2005, in Mesa of natural causes. A memorial service will be in Mesa at a later date and burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. A native of Trigg County, he was born May 19, 1929, the son of the late Travis and Mary Bell Stephens. He served in the National Guard from 1947-1961 and on active Army duty until 1979 with assignments in armor, Army aviation and Army aviation research and development. He was a veteran of two tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He had served as president of the board of Leisure World Community Association. Survivors include his wife, Donna Wilcox Stephens; his children, Michael J. Stephens, Austin, Texas, Kevin B. Stephens, San Luis Obispo, Calif., Lisa Stephens Sykes, Bethania, N.C., David R. Stephens, Camarillo, Calif.; a sister, Barbara Isom, Nashville, Tenn., and six grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the donor's charity of choice.
