More detail on this person: Joseph (Joe) Conrad Schlein, age 82, passed away on December 9, 2021, in San Antonio, TX. Joe was born on January 21, 1939 in Yorktown, Texas, to Joseph Conrad Schlein Sr. and Iola Geffert Schlein. Those close to Joe describe him as a larger-than-life kind of man. He was brave, courageous, and adventurous. He made an impact on everyone he encountered. Joe had an infectious smile and was a wonderful conversationist. He had a wide array of interests and talents. He was an accomplished pilot, marksman, gunsmith, saddle maker, mechanic, history buff, avid reader and hunter. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and sharing the many stories he had. Joe was extremely proud of his military service. At 17, Joe left Texas to enlist in the U.S. Air Force in 1956. He began his military career as a flight mechanic, and in 1968 he transferred to the Army. Joe completed the Warrant Officer course and subsequently trained as a helicopter pilot. He completed two tours of duty in the Vietnam War, serving as a scout pilot and Medical Evacuation pilot in the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry. He retired from the military in 1978 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Iola Schlein, brother Bobby W. Schlein and daughter Debbi Kline. He is survived by his wife Paula Klaudt Schlein, son Joseph R Schlein and wife Julie, daughter Brenda Klar and husband Anthony, son Robert Willingham, daughter Rachel Arevian and husband Matthew, grandchildren Brandi Williams, Jesica Ingalls, Christopher Schlein, Shane Klar, Chelsea Maguire, Corey Schlein, Collin Schlein, Alexandria Willingham, Evelyn Arevian, Francis Arevian and 14 great-grandchildren. A memorial service and reception will be held on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Bexar Social Hall, located at 15681 Bexar Bowling, Marion, Texas. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to Disabled American Veterans at https://www.ihelpveterans.org/ or a nonprofit charity of your choice.
