More detail on this person: Lt Col Jackson Kermit Servant Schultz, 77 Jackson Kermit Schultz Dothan Eagle, The (AL) - Monday, February 20, 2006 AL United States Retired US Army Lt. Col. Jackson Kermit Schultz of Enterprise passed away after a long illness on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at home in the arms of his beloved wife, Jane Walls Schultz. He was 77. The family will receive friends at the Patterson-Sorrells Funeral Home at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23. A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m. A distinguished Vietnam veteran, he had served his country bravely and honorably for nearly all his adult life successively as an officer, pilot, and civil servant. Born in New Tazewell, Tenn., Lt. Col. Schultz attended elementary and high school there, leaving high school his junior year to join the Army. He completed basic training as World War II wound to a close. He returned to New Tazewell after the war to finish high school and returned to the Army just before the Korean War broke out. He served the Army as a paratrooper and combat engineer with the 82nd Airborne Division. He attended Officer Candidate School and showed an aptitude for flying. During Vietnam, he served two tours, as a captain and a major, flying the UH-1 Huey and in the course of rescue mission he was shot down twice. The first time was a nighttime reconnaissance mission, and though he did manage to land the chopper, he and his crew had no idea where. As it turned out, they were just barely inside friendly territory. The second downing was more precipitous and occurred on the way back from a rescue mission, which fortunately was completed without casualties. He also flew fixed wing aircraft and served in that capacity in Saudi Arabia. He retired with 26 years active service in 1975 and continued to make his home in Enterprise, taking a civil servant position in the Fort Rucker Aviation Branch Safety Office where he retired in 1997 after 21 years. Along the way he earned his bachelor's degree in engineering from Tampa University and master's in education from Troy State. He was an avid golfer, an impressive bass fisherman, a good story-teller, a member of the Quiet Birdmen (QB's), and a reluctant but respectable gardener. But most importantly, he was a loving husband and father; right to the end, he was a good and noble soldier. Survivors include his wife, Jane Walls Schultz; daughters, Melissa Schultz Fife of Seattle; Frances Myrick Schultz of New York City; Duvall Schultz Fuqua of Atlanta; a son, Christopher Andrew Schultz of Marietta, Ga; a stepdaughter, Rhonda Hanna Wilson of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters, Doris Sowder and Helen Pressnell of Villa Rica, Ga.; a brother-in-law, Max Walls, of Enterprise and two sisters-in-law, Billie Walls and Betty Walls Owen, of Enterprise; grandchildren, Karen Schultz Mazella of Thompson Station, Tenn., Andrew Schultz of Nashville, Tenn., Katie Schultz of Knoxville, Tenn., Ruth Fuqua, John Rex Fuqua, Frances Fuqua, and Dorothy Isabel Fuqua, all of Atlanta, Jackson Schultz and Joel Gurley of Marietta, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Isabel and Jonathan Mazella, of Thompson Station, Tenn; two nieces, Carolyn Henderson and Laverne Swenson, both of Villa Rica, Ga.
