More detail on this person: Peter Hyde Smyth of San Jose, CA, died on October 22, 2017, following a brief but valiant battle with lung cancer. Born and raised in Connecticut, the son of Barbara (Hyde) and Russell Smyth, he began a 20+ year military career following his graduation from the University of Connecticut in 1966. A helicopter pilot and flight instructor, Peter was a decorated Vietnam War veteran. Subsequent deployments took him and his family to Texas, Germany, Virginia and Hawaii, before he retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Armed with masters degrees in business and education, he embarked on a second career in education and social services, teaching special education in San Francisco and managing a homeless shelter before moving to San Jose to help take care of his grandchildren. "Paga" was an unfailingly proud and engaged father/grandfather who enjoyed countless hours supporting his daughters' and, more recently, his five grandchildren's academic, creative and sporting events. An inveterate traveler, there were few places on his bucket list that Peter hadn't visited. He recently returned from Asia and had already booked his next adventure when his illness overcame him. He is survived by his daughter Shannon and her husband Roberto (Mendoza) and their children Sam and Sophia and his daughter Kristen and her husband Scott (Green) and their children Maya, Zach and Noah. He is survived also by his brother and sister and their spouses: Hal (Sandra) Smyth and Bonnie (John) Heudorfer, niece Kristen Craft and nephew Joe Tamucci. He was predeceased by his former wife Darlene. Donations may be made to codeofsupport.org.
