More detail on this person: Ralph G. Sanders Ralph G. Sanders Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Tuesday, March 20, 2007 VIRGINIA BEACH - Ralph G. "Sandy" Sanders, 81, longtime resident of Virginia Beach and a denizen of Pungo, went to his eternal rest March 17, 2007, in a Norfolk hospital. He was born on Sept. 28, 1925, in Alton, Mo., and was the widow of Lola Drummond Sanders. Sandy graduated from Alton High School in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was commissioned as a naval officer in 1959, and served with distinction until his retirement as a lieutenant commander in 1973. He was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the Navy, he devoted himself to volunteer work, including building and maintenance projects for Charity United Methodist Church, the Pungo Strawberry Festival and the Pungo Kiwanis Club. He is survived by a son, Louis Sanders and his wife Jackie of Norfolk; a sister, Helen Milkovich of Granite City, Ill.; a brother, Otto Sanders of St. Louis, Mo.; many nieces and nephews and cousins by the dozens. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Charity United Methodist Church, 4080 Charity Neck Road at the corner of Gum Bridge Road, Virginia Beach, by the Revs. Deborah Fair and Tommy Markham. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Charity UMC Building Fund, the National Parkinson Foundation or the American Cancer Society. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
