Sonny was born March 2, 1936, in Nora Springs, Iowa, to Vercyl George and Miriam Beatrice Sherbino. He moved to California at the age of 10 and graduated from Citrus High School, Asusa, Calif., in 1954. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army and served in Army Aviation for 22 years. He flew both rotary and fixed-wing Army aircraft. Sonny also retired from Bell Helicopter as quality assurance engineer.

Survivors: Wife, Joyce Sherbino; daughters, Shana Volkert and husband, Jason, of Spring, Lana Thompson of Spring, Gayla Mixon of Houston, Kathy Sherbino of California; sons, Richard Sherbino of California, Philip Mixon of Virginia; grandchildren, Katelyn and Carson Roper, Victoria Volkert, Lance and Landon Thompson, Garrett Mixon; sister, Mary Jo Dickenson and husband, Jim, of Oregon; brothers, Dennis Sherbino and wife, Nancy, of Oregon and Larry Sherbino of California; and many nieces and nephews.
