SILLS Daily Press (Newport News, VA) - Saturday, August 31, 2002 Charles Wayne Sills, 80, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2002, at the Warwick Forest Retirement Home. A native of Clinton, Oklahoma, Wayne had been a Newport News resident on and off for the past 41 years. He was a veteran of the Coast Guard, Navy, Army Air Corps and US Army, having spent 33 years in the services. He served during WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam. He was an enlisted man until he went through Officer Candidate School in 1945. During the Korean War, he was a member of Task Force Smith, where he was severely wounded while trying to capture a North Korean tank. His tours included several stateside posts, where he was instrumental in the selection and activation of Fort Rucker, Alabama, as the home of US Army Aviation. Mr. Sills was a Master Army Aviator qualified in both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. At Ft. Eustis, he served as the Deputy, and then Commandant, of the Officer Candidate School. This was followed by a tour in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot, working Transportation Corps experiments. He retired in 1974 as a Lt. Colonel. Among his awards were the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Air Medal and Legion of Merit. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Jackie Sills. Survivors include his sons, Charlie Sills and his wife, Barbara, of Newport News; Rick Sills and his wife, Wanda, of Yorktown; and Susan Sills and her husband, Andy Meier, of Mount Nebo, W.VA; and two grandchildren, Brian and Jennifer Sills. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at the Weymouth Funeral Home, with Dr. William Davis Jr. of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Yorktown, officiating. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society.
