More detail on this person: Elgin L. Smith Services for Elgin L. Smith, 76, of Moffat will be at 11:45 a.m. Thursday in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. He died Friday, Aug. 16, in a Temple hospital. He was born in San Antonio. He served in the U.S. Navy and Army, retiring at Fort Hood in 1972 as a CW3. He served as a radioman in the Navy during World War II and as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War. During his final tour at Fort Hood, he served as personal pilot to III Corps commander. He was awarded the Purple Heart during World War II while in the Navy and received the Army Aviator Badge, Vietnam Service Medal and two bronze stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal with numerals 12 and V device and other commendations and awards. After retiring from the military he was a private instructor of aeronautics and the owner of many small businesses. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jimmy Holzer and a stepson, Mark Warehime. Survivors are his wife, Setsuko Smith of Temple; three sons, Church Smith of Round Rock, John Smith of Barton, Vt., and Jeff Smith of Kempner; three daughters, Lynde Lieske of Rising Sun, Md., Kay Schomp of Killeen and Lisa Everett of Nolanville; four stepsons,. Jimmy Warehime of Georgetown, David Warehime of Belton, Dean Warehime of Temple and Lloyd Warehime of Waco; 28 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
