More detail on this person: Jack Vernon Stephens Jack Vernon Stephens, 80, of Mineral Wells, departed this life 12:25 p.m. on June 20, 2008, at St. Joseph's Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Mineral Wells on Feb. 22, 1928, a son of the late Grover C. and Sarah Province Stephens. Jack was the co-owner of Carl E. Stephens Construction Co. and constructed many local buildings and schools. Jack graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1946 and joined the Marines that summer. While in the Marine Corps, he served on the USS Missouri and was a member of the Honor Guard for President Truman in South America. Upon discharge from the Marines, he attended Ohio University and studied Civil Engineering. While at OU he joined the Army ROTC. In 1952, Jack graduated from OU with a degree in Engineering and a Regular Army commission as a second lieutenant. In 1956, Jack earned a master's degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. Jack was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood as a company commander and was proud that his was the only company in the battalion with no AWOLs. While in the Army Corps of Engineers, Jack served at Fort Belvoir, Fort Meade, Fort Knox, Fort Leavenworth, Drexel University and in Germany, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and Galveston, Texas. Jack was an active member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, serving on numerous committees and teaching Sunday School. Jack served on the Board of Directors of the YMCA and was selected YMCA Man of the Year in 1997. He was past president of Rotary and the W.Va. Contractors' Association. He was a member of the W.Va. Society of Professional Engineers, a member of the PHS Foundation Board, and a founding member of the PHS Stadium Committee. Jack loved youth and athletics, and he was very involved in improving the athletic facilities at PHS. Jack was honored to have the new auxiliary gym at PHS named after him, as well as a track award, volleyball tournament and volleyball scholarship. Jack is survived by Betty Melrose Stephens, his wife of almost 60 years; one daughter, Marqueta of Parkersburg; two sons, Scott and his wife, Linda, of Mineral Wells and Brad of Charlotte, N.C.; and three granddaughters, Anne and Jill Stephens of Cincinnati and Kim Stephens of Mineral Wells. Jack was preceded in death by his brother, Carl E. Stephens; and sisters, Mabel Vannoy, Ruth Rector, Gail Leonard and Mary Stephens. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Thomas McDowell officiating. Burial will follow at Big Tygart United Methodist Church Cemetery with full military rites by American Legion Post 15. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at the Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 400 Green St., Parkersburg, or one hour prior to services Monday at the church. The family requests that donations be made to the Jack V. Stephens volleyball scholarship at the Parkersburg Community Foundation.
