More detail on this person: Col. (Ret.) David F. "Jack" Stoutamire Jr. Col. (Ret.) David F. "Jack" Stoutamire Jr., 82, died on Sept. 18 at the Madrid Home in Madrid, Iowa. He was born on July 22, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He grew up on a farm and loved eating corn on the cob. Jack graduated from Blume High School in 1948 and The Ohio State University in 1952. He was commissioned in 1952 as a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army. During his military career, he served in the Armor and Aviation branches, with early postings in Germany and performing a key role in the formation of what became the Air Assault Division at Fort Benning, Ga. Jack's military career followed the growth of Army aviation, and he was always proud of his contribution in this area. Completing two tours in the Vietnam War, Jack piloted aircraft in a variety of missions. The first as an artillery spotter and the second as the personal pilot for Gen. William Westmoreland, the commanding officer of all forces in theater. He was entrusted with flying entertainers of the USO, and flew for John Wayne, who was in Vietnam for research for the movie "Green Berets." Jack's last assignment was as deputy commander for the U.S. Army Agency for Aviation Safety at Fort Rucker, Ala. Jack earned many awards and commendations, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and Air Medal. Jack retired in 1978 in Enterprise, Ala., where he earned his MBA from Troy State University. He stayed connected with the military as an assistant professor with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at Fort Rucker. He is survived by his children, David of Sandy Springs, Ga.; Mark and his wife, Mandy, of Cumming, Ga.; Melanie Welte and her husband, David, of Granger, Iowa; Scott and his wife, Gayle, of Panama City Beach, Fla.; and his five grandchildren, Danielle, Benton, Alex, Genera and Randy. He was preceded in death by his parents, David F. and Evon Stoutamire Sr., and his loving wife, Sarah. Jack will be remembered for his contagious smile, big heart and his willingness to help others. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Grace United Methodist Church in Hosford, Fla., from 6 to 8 p.m. EDT. Funeral services with military honors will be at 11 a.m. EDT, on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Grace United Methodist Church, with burial at Blue Creek Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Madrid Home, the Army Aviation Museum at Fort Rucker or the Alzheimer's Association .
