More detail on this person: Joseph E. Symonds, Lt. Colonel, USAF (Retired) April 02, 1938 - March 25, 1983 Cremation Rites Held For Col. J. Symonds. Lt. Col. Ret., Joseph E. Symonds Jr., 44, of 1038 E. Manchester Road, Kaysville, was dead on arrival at the Humana Hospital Davis North in Layton, Friday March 25, 1983 of injuries suffered in a car-tanker accident. Col. Symonds was born April 2, 1938, in Watertown, Mass., a son of Joseph E. Sr. and Vera Mills Symonds. He married Betty Slaunewhite on Aug. 26, 1961 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School in Nova Scotia. He began his military career as a Canadian air cadet. He graduated from Da'housie University in Nova Scotia. He also attended the National Technology School of Computer Programming in the industrial College of the Armed Forces. He was a management graduate of numerous air university courses. He was a command pilot with 5,000 flying hours. He was a helicopter pilot and for the past 11 years of his military career, he commanded several units. At the time of his retirement on April 1, 1980, he was the Deputy Commander of Operations for the 40th Air Rescue and Recovery Squadron at Hilly Air Force Base. His U.S. duty stations included Hill Air Force Base; Loring Air Base, Maine; Turner Air Force Base, GA.; and Patrick Air Force Base, Fla., where he was a member pilot of the Apollo 4 launce site recovery force. His overseas tours included Vietnam, the Philippines, Ethiopia, New Guinea, Brazil and Greenland. He had received the Presidential Unit Citation, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. He had also received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with eight Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Army Good Conduct Medal. Following his retirement, he was a helicopter pilot for the Rocky Mountain Helicopter Co. at Provo. At the time of his death, he was a real estate agent for Realty World Abide in Ogden. Surviving are his widow of Kaysville, three daughters, Rhonda L. Symonds, Debra J. Symonds and Kendell M. Symonds, all of Kaysville. Also surviving are his father and stepmother, Joseph E. Sr. and Jean E. Symonds. Of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; one brother, Arthur Symonds, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Cremation services were held at Lindquists and Sons Crematory in Ogden. Memorial services were conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Hill Air Force Base Chapel. The funeral was under the direction of Lindquist Kaysville Mortuary. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Captain Symonds served in the Vietnam War as a HH-43F pilot with Det. 6 & 7, 38th ARRS in the 1966-1967-time frame.
