More detail on this person: CW-3 Doug Eschler was a pilot, the other pilot was CW4 Leon (Eddie) Schoenborn. The aircraft was climbing to 10,000 feet when trouble started, they began a rapid descent, but the forward transmission failed before they could land. 41 sport parachutists were on board, none of them jumped until it was to late and their parachutes did not open. The crew and aircraft CH-47C 74-22292 were assigned to the 295th ASHC at Coleman Barracks, Manheim, FRG. The crash was due to a mechanical failure of the forward transmission caused by clogged oil lines in the forward transmission. The bearings were not being properly lubricated and they failed. This happened during the 375th Anniversary Celebration of the city of Manheim, FRG. From: William M. McGinnis, CW-5 retired
