More detail on this person: Crash of Training Plane Fatal to Robert Swanson Chief Warrant Officer Robert T. Swanson, 28, was killed Tuesday in an airplane crash near Fort Rucker, Ala. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Swanson, 3202 Amberly La., Fairfax. Mr. Swanson, an army student pilot, was on temporary duty from Fort Carson, Colo. He was practicing night landings with an instructor pilot when the crash occurred. The twin engine OV-1 Mohawk failed to gain sufficient altitude following the takeoff and crashed near the end of the runway. The instructor pilot, Sherman Roew, of Newton, Ala., also was killed in the crash. Mr. Swanson, who lived with his wife and two children at Fort Carson, had recently returned from a year in Vietnam. He was born in Danbury, Conn., attended Fairfax High School and Florida Southern College and graduated from Embry Riddle Aeronautical Institute in Miami. His father is president of Yeonas Development Corporation, Vienna, VA. 15 MAR 66 CWO Robert T. Swanson [P] Sherman Roew [IP] Alabama U SAAVNS OV-1C #61-2680 A/C was practicing night landings when A/C failed to gain sufficient altitude following a takeoff and crashed near the end of runway at Cairns AAF at approx 2200 hrs.
