More detail on this person: Fred Earl Shirley Jr. (82) passed away >peacefully with his Family by his side on November 6, 2017. Fred Earl Shirley Jr. was born on February 17, 1935 to the late Velma Shirley & Fred Earl Shirley Sr. of Alpharetta, Georgia. Fred was a Veteran of the Navy for 20 years. His Military career began at North Georgia Military College. Fred joined the Navy in 1955 and graduated Officer Training School. Fred obtained his wings as a Navy Pilot in 1957 >and went on to serve a distinguished career flying both helicopter and fixed winged aircraft. Fred served on the USS Wasp, USS Randolph, USS Independence, and the USS New Orleans. Fred served tours in Pensacola Florida, Norfolk Virginia, San Diego, Coronado, Monterey California, Keflavik, Reykjavik, Iceland. Fred's Active Duty included Vietnam, the Middle East, South Pacific, Southeast Asia and the Artic. Fred completed 7 carrier rescues and numerous open sea rescues including the crew from Apollo14. Fred taught flight training and survival at Pensacola NAS and Saufley Field. and NJROTC at Suwannee High School in Florida. Fred is survived by his Wife of 20 years, Shirley (McInturff) Shirley of Gulf Breeze, Florida, his Sister, Sally David of Alpharetta, Georgia and Children, Kim (Shirley) Stagner (Paul), Gulf Breeze, Florida, Jim Shirley, Seaside, Florida, Jon Shirley (Linda) of Houston Texas, Steven McInturff of Panama City, Florida, Tina Sarra of Pensacola Beach, Florida, Teresa McInturff of Pensacola, Florida, 9 Grandchildren, Harrison Stagner, Madison Shirley, Katherine Shirley, Elodie Shirley, James Shirley, Kristen Sarra, Kyle Sarra (Tarah), Kaylen Sarra, Logan McInturff, 2 Great Grandchildren, Hailey & Hunter McInturff and numerous Nieces & Nephews. Services will be held at Gulf Breeze Presbyterian Church. Visitation at 9:00 AM Thursday, November 9, 2017 with Services beginning at 9:45 AM. Procession immediately following service to Barrancas National Cemetery for Military Graveside Service, Pensacola Naval Air Station.
