More detail on this person: Lt. Col. Vaughn LaGrand Terry Salt Lake Tribune, The (UT) - November 29, 1998. Deceased Name: Lt. Col. Vaughn LaGrand Terry (Ret.) Vaughn LaGrand Terry passed into the next life on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1998, after a painful ordeal with cancer. Born September 11, 1926, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to LaGrand Redell and Clara Leah Stringfellow Terry (both deceased). Vaughn was reared in the McKinley Ward in Temple View Stake. He served as a Merchant Marine in World War II, then served honorably as a missionary in the British Isles from 1947-49. He married Peggy Sue Roche on November 5, 1950; later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. A career officer in the U.S. Army, Lt. Col. Terry served in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and two tours of duty in Viet Nam. He relished building his body and his mind. He was one of the first Special Forces Green Berets, was a master parachutist and loved to pilot both fixed-wing and rotor-wing aircraft. Vaughn had a special love for poetry and music; he could recite poetry for hours and had a beautiful singing voice. The most important priorities in Lt. Col. Terry's life were his church and family. A devoted High Priest and scriptorian, Brother Terry served as branch president, High Councilor, and virtually all other callings, but most loved teaching the Gospel Doctrine class (21 years) and serving as worker and supervisor in the Manti LDS Temple (seven years). One of the highlights of his adventurous life was being together with his eight children and their spouses in the temple. Survived by all his siblings, Elise Bowers (Ray deceased), Glenis Burdette (Joel deceased), Douglas S. Terry (Cory), Margene Wiest (Don), and Janee Spencer (Lyle). Also survived by his eight children, James LaGrand (Judy), Stephen Ben (Kay), John Parshall (Mikey), Susan Adams (Lyman), Miriam Wolfley (Bruce), Rebecca Louise, Denise Weight (Mark), Kathleen Zenger (Dean); and 29 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 30, at 11 a.m. at the Nephi Stake Center, 351 North 100 West. Burial at 3 p.m. in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
