More detail on this person: Allen l. Toews,64,
of Warrenton died December 21 en route from his
rural residence to the Ashland Bassets' hunt
kennels. Born May 25, 1943, in York, Nebraska,
Mr. Toews has been a Warrenton resident since
1984 and was joint master and huntsman of the
Ashland pack at the time of his death and had been
a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of
the Buildings and Grounds Committee for the
Institiute Farm at Aldie, Virginia, the
headquarters of the National Beagle Club and
Basset Hound Committee. Ashland Bassets was
founded as the private hunting pack of the late
Mrs. Amory Carhart of Ashland Farm and had been
recieved from her when she retired from the hunt
field by the late Mrs. Harcourt (Scottie) Lees,
the late Mrs. Francis (Byrd) Green, and the late
Mrs. Bernie (Helen Ashe) Falls with instructions
that the pack be maintained as a public fixture to
preserve the Virginioa heritage of the sport of
foot chasing rabbits with hounds. A member since
1989, Mr. Toews became Master and Huntsman of
the Ashland pack in 1991 and was a respected
figure in the hunting world because of his
devotion to his pack and his sense of organization
toward the betterment of the sport and the basset
breed.
Mr. Toews was a retired commericial helicopter
pilot who began his flight career during the
Vietnam War, serving two tours in Viet Nam as a
combat command pilot and an instructor, and was
then stationed at Wertheim-am-Main, Germany
before returning to civilian life as a commericial
agricultural and instructor pilot. He is survived
by his wife, Kathleen King, of the home and two
sisters: Mrs. Merlin (Evelyn) Volkmer of rural
Schickley, Nebraska and Miss Marty Toews of
Lincoln, Nebraska. His parents predeceased him.
