Wellman, age 72, of Statesboro, died Saturday,
April 18, 2015, in Memorial Health University
Medical Center in Savannah after an extended
illness. He was a native of Wadena, Minnesota, and
graduated high school there. He enlisted in the
U.S. Army, later became a captain and was a
helicopter pilot in Vietnam. Among numerous
awards and medals, he was the recipient of the
Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service
Stars and 18 Air Medal Awards. He retired from the
National Guard after a combined 32 years of
service. He lived in Statesboro most of his life,
attended Georgia Southern University and worked
with ITT Grinnell for several years. For many
years, he worked as a correctional officer at
Coastal State Prison in Savannah and Smith
Transitional Center in Claxton. He was Methodist
by faith.
Mr. Wellman is survived by his wife of 37 years,
Blanche Campbell Wellman; one daughter, Kelly
Wellman, both of Statesboro; one sister, Alice
Arnold of Missouri; and several nieces and
nephews.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, April
21st, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall
Funeral Home with Pastor Michael Plowman
officiating. Burial will follow in the Ohoopee
Cemetery, with military honors.
