More detail on this person: On Friday, April 24, 2020, Reverdy ("Rev") E. Winfree Jr., loving husband of Judy and father of Laura Winfree, Reverdy E. Winfree III, and Peyton Winfree, passed away peacefully at the age of 79 after battling a long illness. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 53 years, Judy (Edmonson) Winfree, his son Reverdy E. Winfree III (Trip) & wife (Elvia); daughters Laura & Peyton Winfree; grandchildren Lauren Morales, Ian Morales, Zachary Winfree, and Victoria Winfree. Rev was born on May 19th, 1940 in Fall River, Massachusetts. He was a 1958 graduate of Granby High School in Norfolk, VA, afterwhich he enlisted into the United States Coast Guard, where he dutifully served for two years. After serving in the Coast Guard, Rev attended Virginia Military Institute (third generation "Brother Rat" Class of 1964) and commissioned upon graduation (BS Electrical Engineering) into the Army to fulfill his service commitment. Rev subsequently was sent to Fort Sill Oklahoma for artillery school, where in his off duty time he met his future Mrs. Right, Judy. A short time after marriage, Rev applied and was accepted into helicopter flight school to become a UH-1 pilot. Thereafter, he was sent to Vietnam and served a tour. With his service commitment satisfied, he departed the Army at the rank of Captain and was hired to Virginia Electric Power Company (VEPCO), where he rose to become the Director of the Southern Division Planning department. After a 27 year career, he retired from VEPCO and hired on with North Carolina Electric Membership Co-OP, (NCEMC) and worked in the engineering department for another eight years. He retired and settled in Raleigh, North Carolina for the remainder of his days. He was known and loved by all whom knew him for his love to laugh, his smile, and his insatiable thrill of the hunt to find collectibles at yard sales, estate sales, auctions, and especially "flea markets"; with the Raleigh State Fairgrounds as his favorite. He collected and enjoyed antique toys, comic books, advertising, and coins. He loved many genres of music with gospel, do-wop, rock-n-roll, and bluegrass as his favorite. He was a long-time member of Saint Michael's Episcopal Church, where served as an usher. He also served on missions trips to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and later Belize. We are all blessed to have known Rev and are better people because of his impact on our lives. He will be cherished and missed. A Memorial Service for Rev will be announced at a later date due to the COVID-19. Memorials may be made to Saint Michael's Episcopal Church, Raleigh, NC., and the Virginia Military Institute Alumni
