War Story:
Specialist 5th Class Lane was the only one of the personnel, KIA on 15 July 62, who was a member of the 140th. CWO Goldberg and Specialist 5th Class Guthrie were assigned to the 8th Transportation Company (Lt Helicopter) H-21. In addition, the province in which the loss occurred was Kontum Province. Also, The Major who was co-pilot of the helicopter and CO of the 8th Trans was Robert F. Corneil Jr. not Cornell. His bio can be found in Flightlines of the Army Aviation Museum at Fort Rucker, AL. My understanding is that CWO Goldberg, Specialists Guthrie and Lane, were all awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, posthumously. Major Corneil was also awarded the DFC for this action. I believe there were 6 KIA's and only one injured. One injured: Major Corneil KIA's: Lt. COL Tencza, CWO Goldberg, Specialist Guthrie and Specialist Lane, and two Vietnamese ARVN. For further info please contact CWO Ken Wilson. This mission consisted of two helicopters, the second of which was flown by Ken.
