Accident Summary:

After departing a pinnacle pick up zone, the aircraft lost RPM and lift crashing into an artillery position at the bottom of the hill. Exploding ammunition and fire destroyed the aircraft. Density altitude was a contributing factor.


War Story:
The crash site UTM is given as BT401145. Per Kelley p5-223 Hill 54 at BT396145 was established as 1st Bn, 5th Marines C.P. in June 1966 and was the 1/14 Inf base camp in the summer of 1967. Hill 54 lies immediately west of Hwy QL-1 about 10 KM E-SE of Tam Ky (18 KM NW of Chu Lai, if you prefer). There are photos and a map of the place at http://www.1-14th.com/LZ_Hill54_25.html The crash site as given in the ops log is right between the railroad berm and Hwy QL-1; the first photo cited above actually shows the location.
