War Story:
In support of SAMURAI IV, HMM-165 committed a flight of four CH-46As to augment the 281st AHC's support for the Special Forces and their Mobile Strike Force CIDGs. I was the HMM-165 flight leader. As the mission for the day unfolded Capt. Romero’s CH-46A was shot down about 300 meters from the zone resulting in four KIAs (including LCPT Barr, the gunner) and six WIAs. Capt. Montague and 1Lt. Archer received heavy fire while trying to land near the survivors and dead from Capt. Romero’s crew. They attempted to pick another suitable zone near the crash site, when they had a blade strike with a tree and the aircraft crashed. At first we thought Montague, Archer, and their crew were dead. But two days later, a Marine accident investigation team was able to get into this CH-46A. They reported no signs of blood or bodies and that the restraining harnesses had been cut. A few days later, Hanoi Radio mentioned them by name, so we knew the NVA had them. In 1973 I represented the Marine Corps in Hanoi and flew out with Montague and Archer to Clark Field on the third Operation HOMECOMING flight. Submitted by Dan McDyre, Jan 1994.
