War Story:
In support of SAMURAI IV, HMM-165 committed a flight of four CH-46As to augment the 281st AHC's support for the Special Forces and their Mobile Strike Force CIDGs. I was the HMM-165 flight leader. As the mission for the day unfolded Capt. J.E. Morgan's CH-46A was shot down in the zone the Army inserted a maintenance team to prepare this CH-46A for extraction by a crane. The tactical situation around this aircraft continued to deteriorate and Capt. Romero flew this CH-46A to extract the maintenance team. This helicopter was shot down about 300 meters from the zone resulting in four KIAs (including LCPT Barr, the gunner) and six WIAs. Capt. Montague and 1lt. Archer were lost when they attempted to rescue Capt. Romero’s crew. Submitted by Dan McDyre, Jan 1994.
