Summary: This PEDRO recieved heavy ground fire while attempting recovery of 5 DUSTOFF crewmembers. RCC was killed. Aircraft recovered to Phu Cat.

War Story:
The 3 ARRGp quarterly unit history states that an HH-43 PEDRO from Det 13, 38 ARRSq from Phu Cat AF was scrambled on a SAR mission on 17 Sep to recover five DUSTOFF crewmembers who were shot down. As the PEDRO was attempting the pick up, heavy ground fire was experienced. The Rescue Crew Commander, Captain David H. Pittard, was hit in the left sites and pronouced dead upon arrival at Qui Nhon. The aircraft recived severe battle damage, but was able to recover to Phu Cat.
