War Story:
I was the AC of AH-1 covering Jim. He had descended out of altitude over jungle and was heading toward our recon area at tree top level. After crossing a clear area I saw purple smoke thrown out left side as the AC pitched nose down hitting ground. Jim was only 15/20 feet AGL at the time, I saw gunner fall clear of AC as it hit. I took 7.62 and 12.7 from tree line while trying to cover them. Jim was a close friend, there were no radio calls or even squelch break as it happened, I believe he had to have been hit immediately with the first rounds fired. From: Rick Chesson
